Spraying WD-40 inside a faucet spout or valve body introduces a petroleum-based chemical solvent that leaves an oily residue, taints drinking water, and accelerates the degradation of internal rubber seals, washers, and O-rings. Over time, this causes the rubber to swell and leak. It is never an effective substitute for proper cleaning with white vinegar and lubricating with silicone grease. Verification: Flush the faucet thoroughly with running water for two minutes if WD-40 was introduced.
