Why mosquitoes bite at 3am is due to mosquito biology, species behavior, and human factors that make nighttime biting common, especially from certain species that are most active at night. Many mosquito species, particularly Culex mosquitoes which are common house mosquitoes and vectors of West Nile virus, are nocturnal and most active from dusk to dawn, with peak biting activity around midnight to 3am when temperatures are cooler, humidity higher, and winds calmer, which favors their flight and host seeking. Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide, body heat, and skin odors that humans emit even while sleeping, and at 3am you are stationary, breathing steadily, and have exposed skin, making you easy target. Additionally, at 3am there is less disturbance, light, and movement, so mosquitoes can feed uninterrupted. Some species like Aedes aegypti bite during day, but Culex pipiens bites at night. If you notice bites at 3am indoors, it may be because mosquitoes entered house through open windows or doors and are trapped inside with you as only food source. Factors like not using screens, having standing water near bedroom, and sleeping with lights off increase nighttime bites. Mosquitoes can detect CO2 from up to 100 feet away, so sleeping person is beacon. Using fans, bed nets, window screens, and barrier treatments reduces 3am bites.
