What month is worst for mosquitoes depends on region and climate, but generally July and August are worst months for mosquitoes in most of United States and Canada, with peak activity in midsummer. Mosquitoes need warm temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit and standing water to breed, so their populations build up in spring and peak when temperatures are highest and humidity is high. In northern US and Canada, mosquito season starts in May after snowmelt creates standing water, increases in June, and peaks in July and August when temperatures average 70 to 85 degrees, providing optimal breeding conditions, then declines in September as temperatures drop. In southern US like Florida, Texas, and Gulf Coast, mosquito season is longer from March to October, with worst months being June through September, especially August and September after summer rains create many breeding sites, and also hurricane season creates flooding. In Southwest US, monsoon season in July and August brings worst mosquitoes. Mosquito activity is highest at dusk and dawn. Worst month also correlates with disease risk, as West Nile virus cases peak in August and September when mosquito populations are highest and have had time to become infected. To reduce impact, start mosquito control in April or May before peak, remove standing water, and use barrier treatments.
