Do dryer sheets repel mosquitoes is common myth, but answer is dryer sheets have limited, if any, proven effectiveness as mosquito repellent and should not be relied upon for protection. The myth originated from anecdotal reports that scented dryer sheets like Bounce contain linalool and beta-citronellol, which are found in some natural repellents, and placing dryer sheet in pocket or rubbing on skin might repel mosquitoes. However, scientific studies, including research by entomologists at Kansas State University and University of Illinois, have found dryer sheets have little to no significant repellent effect on mosquitoes, with some studies showing mosquitoes were slightly repelled for very short time but not enough to prevent bites, and effect disappeared within minutes. EPA does not register dryer sheets as repellent, and CDC does not recommend them. Dryer sheets are designed to soften fabric and reduce static, not repel insects, and their fragrance is not concentrated enough to deter mosquitoes, which are attracted by carbon dioxide, body heat, and skin odors more than repelled by mild scent. Some people place dryer sheets in outdoor seating areas and report fewer mosquitoes, but this is likely placebo or coincidental. Effective repellents contain DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535. For yard protection, barrier sprays with pyrethroids, removing standing water, using fans, and wearing long sleeves are proven effective, while dryer sheets are not.
