Who did ADT merge with has had several mergers and acquisitions in its long history. Historically, ADT was acquired by Tyco International in 1997, becoming part of Tyco Fire and Security, then spun off as ADT Corporation in 2012. In 2016, ADT was acquired by Apollo Global Management for $6.9 billion and merged with Protection One and ASG Security, which Apollo already owned, combining under ADT brand to create largest security provider in US. More recently, ADT has had partnerships rather than mergers, in 2020 Google invested $450 million in ADT and partnered for smart home integration with Nest, and ADT acquired Sunpro Solar and rebranded as ADT Solar. In 2023, ADT sold its commercial business to GTCR for $1.6 billion, separating residential and commercial. As of 2026, ADT has not merged with another major competitor like Vivint or SimpliSafe, but continues acquisition strategy for solar and smart home companies. The most significant merger was with Protection One in 2016 under Apollo ownership that formed current ADT Inc that went public in 2018.
