Heil, specifically Heil Environmental, the leading maker of garbage truck bodies, has changed ownership several times in recent decades. The company was founded in 1901 and remained family and privately owned for most of its history. In 1993, it was acquired by United Waste Systems and later part of a private equity portfolio. In 2013, Dover Corporation, a large diversified industrial manufacturer headquartered in Downers Grove, Illinois, bought Heil Environmental for approximately 300 million dollars and placed it in its newly formed Environmental Solutions Group alongside other waste equipment brands like Marathon and Curotto-Can. Dover owned and invested heavily in Heil for over a decade, expanding its Fort Payne, Alabama plant. Most recently, in February 2024, Terex Corporation, a global manufacturer of materials processing and aerial work platforms based in Norwalk, Connecticut, announced it would acquire Environmental Solutions Group, including Heil, from Dover for 2 billion dollars. The transaction closed in 2024, making Terex the current owner of Heil. Terex plans to operate Environmental Solutions Group as a distinct segment. So if you ask who bought Heil last, the answer is Terex Corporation bought it from Dover Corporation, which had bought it earlier from private owners.
