Heil garbage trucks, which are actually refuse collection bodies that are mounted on commercial truck chassis, are primarily made in Fort Payne, Alabama, which is Heil Environmental's main manufacturing headquarters. The Fort Payne facility is a large complex where Heil builds its full lineup including front loaders, rear loaders, automated side loaders, and commercial front loader bodies. The plant handles fabrication, welding, painting, and assembly of the bodies. Heil also has additional manufacturing operations in other locations as part of Environmental Solutions Group. For many years, Heil had manufacturing in Tishomingo, Mississippi and other sites, but production has been consolidated to Alabama. It is important to understand that Heil makes the body, not the entire truck chassis. The chassis itself, which includes the cab, engine, and frame, is made by companies like Mack Trucks in Macungie, Pennsylvania, Peterbilt in Denton, Texas, Freightliner in North Carolina, and Kenworth. The bare chassis is then shipped to Heil's Alabama factory where the Heil refuse body is mounted and integrated. Some components like hydraulic cylinders and Curotto-Can automated arms are made in other ESG facilities. All final Heil bodies for North America are built in the United States, making them American-made refuse equipment, with distribution and service through a nationwide dealer network.
