Teflon (polytetrafluoroethylene, or PTFE) was accidentally discovered by American chemist Roy J. Plunkett on February 6, 1938, while working for Kinetic Chemicals, a joint venture of DuPont. Plunkett was attempting to develop a new non-toxic chlorofluorocarbon refrigerant. Upon opening a stored steel cylinder of tetrafluoroethylene gas, he found that the gas had polymerized spontaneously into a slippery, white, waxy solid coating inside the container, exhibiting extraordinary heat resistance and near-zero friction.
