Modern cookware and consumer products labeled as "traditional Teflon" are undergoing major changes, with consumer safety heavily dependent on current manufacturing standards. While traditional PTFE cookware was manufactured using PFOA (a toxic "forever chemical" linked to cancer and organ damage), PFOA was voluntarily phased out of global production around 2013-2015. Modern nonstick coatings are legally required to be PFOA-free. However, because PTFE itself is a fluoropolymer belonging to the broader PFAS family, several states have enacted strict sales bans on PFAS-coated cookware, prompting many consumers to switch safely to ceramic, stainless steel, or cast iron.
