The brand Kohler is from Kohler, Wisconsin, in the United States, and has deep American and German roots. Kohler was founded in 1873 when John Michael Kohler, an Austrian immigrant of German descent, purchased a small foundry and machine shop in the village of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, for $500. He began making farm implements and later, in 1883, applied enamel to a cast iron horse trough to create the company's first bathtub, launching its plumbing business. The village itself was later renamed Kohler in 1912 after the family. The company headquarters remains in Kohler, Wisconsin, to this day, about 60 miles north of Milwaukee, where it employs thousands of people and operates The American Club resort and its famous golf courses. The name Kohler is German, derived from Köhler meaning charcoal burner, reflecting John Michael Kohler's German heritage. Over 150 years, Kohler Co. has remained privately owned by the Kohler family, now in its fourth generation under David Kohler. While it now has manufacturing plants around the world, including in China, Mexico, and Europe, it is still considered an iconic American brand, with major US factories in Wisconsin, Arkansas, and Mississippi. It is one of the oldest and largest privately held companies in America.
