When the famous carbonated soft drink was first formulated in 1893 by pharmacist Caleb Bradham in New Bern, North Carolina, it was originally called Brad's Drink. The beverage was concocted using a blend of carbonated water, sugar, vanilla, rare oils, pepsin, and kola nuts. Bradham subsequently purchased the trademark for the recipe a few years later in 1998 and officially renamed the carbonated tonic Pepsi-Cola, derived primarily from the digestive enzyme pepsin and the kola nuts utilized in the original formula, before eventually shortening the commercial brand name simply to Pepsi decades later.
