The most powerful disinfectant in terms of ability to kill the widest range of microbes including bacterial spores, which are hardest to kill, is considered to be sterilants like glutaraldehyde, peracetic acid, and chlorine dioxide, and among more common disinfectants, bleach at high concentration and hydrogen peroxide vapor are extremely powerful. For surface disinfection, sodium hypochlorite bleach at 5000 ppm is one of the most powerful readily available disinfectants, killing bacteria including tuberculosis, viruses including COVID and norovirus, fungi, and spores like C. difficile when used with proper contact time of several minutes, which is why hospitals use it for blood spills and C. difficile rooms. Even more powerful are sporicidal disinfectants like peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide vapor that can sterilize rooms, used in hospitals for terminal cleaning after patients in negative pressure rooms with airborne diseases, capable of killing all microbes including highly resistant bacterial spores. Ethylene oxide gas is extremely powerful for medical instruments but is toxic and not for surfaces. For home use, the most powerful safe option is accelerated hydrogen peroxide products like Oxivir which kill TB, MRSA, and norovirus in 1 minute. Power also depends on contact time and concentration, a powerful disinfectant must stay wet on surface for specified time. While powerful, stronger disinfectants produce more fumes and can irritate lungs and damage surfaces, so need good ventilation and PPE.
