The strongest smelling disinfectants are often those based on bleach, pine oil, or cresols that have pungent odors. Household bleach, sodium hypochlorite, has a sharp, irritating chlorine smell that many people find strong, especially in concentrated form or poorly ventilated areas. Pine oil disinfectants have a very strong pine scent that lingers. Phenolic disinfectants containing ingredients like o-phenylphenol can have a strong medicinal or tar-like odor. Some quaternary ammonium products have added fragrances but their base odor is less strong. Ammonia-based cleaners also have a strong sharp smell. The strength of smell does not necessarily indicate effectiveness, in fact many effective disinfectants like hydrogen peroxide and alcohol have milder odors. Strong smells can cause irritation to eyes, nose, and lungs, so use in well-ventilated areas, wear gloves, and follow label instructions. If odor sensitivity is a concern, consider fragrance-free hydrogen peroxide or alcohol based disinfectants that are effective with less odor, while still achieving disinfection when used correctly.
