PPG has acquired dozens of paint companies over the past century, transforming from a glass company into a global coatings leader. Its most notable recent acquisitions include Glidden and the North American architectural business of AkzoNobel in 2013 for $1.05 billion, which gave PPG ownership of Glidden, Flood, Liquid Nails, and Dulux in Canada. In 2014, PPG acquired Comex for $2.3 billion, which is Mexico's largest paint company with over 4,500 stores and a dominant market share in Latin America. In 2021, PPG completed the acquisition of Tikkurila for $1.5 billion, which owns Tikkurila, Alcro, and Beckers and is the leading paint brand in Finland, Sweden, and the Baltic states. Other major paint company purchases include Olympic Paint and Stain, Sigma Coatings in the Netherlands, Histor, Seigneuria and Ripolin in France, Johnstone's and Leyland in the UK, Renner in Italy, Taubmans, White Knight, and Bristol in Australia, and Devoe Paint, founded in 1754 as America's oldest paint company. PPG has also bought industrial coatings companies like Hemmelrath, Cetelon, and automotive refinish brands. These acquisitions allow PPG to operate local brands with global technology.
