PPG originally stood for Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, which was the company's legal name when it was founded in 1883 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company was established to produce high-quality flat plate glass for windows, mirrors, and early automotive glass, and it built the first commercially successful plate glass factory in the United States. As the glass business grew, the company diversified into paints in the early 1900s, initially making coatings to protect and decorate glass and metal, and later expanding through acquisitions to become one of the world's largest paint and coatings manufacturers. Over time, the company's business became much broader than just glass, encompassing paints, coatings, specialty chemicals, and optical products, so in 1968 the board officially changed the name to PPG Industries, Inc. Today, PPG is no longer treated as an acronym and is simply the company's name, similar to how KFC or IBM are now standalone names. When you see PPG on a paint can at Home Depot or a PPG Paints store, it refers to products made by PPG Industries, which trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol PPG and is headquartered at PPG Place in Pittsburgh.
