PPG paint has gone through several name changes and brand evolutions over its 140-year history. When the company was founded in 1883, it was called Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company and originally only made flat glass, not paint. It entered the paint business in the early 1900s under the name Pittsburgh Paints, which was the flagship brand for many decades and is still remembered by older professional painters who refer to it as Pittsburgh Paint. In the 1960s, after diversifying beyond glass, the corporate name became PPG Industries, and the architectural paint division was marketed as PPG Pittsburgh Paints. Over time, through acquisitions, PPG has owned and sold paint under many different historic names that it acquired, including Glidden founded in 1875, Olympic founded in 1938, Lucite, Devoe founded in 1754 and considered America's oldest paint brand, and Fuller-O'Brien. In 2013, PPG acquired AkzoNobel's North American architectural business, which included the Glidden brand, and it later unified many of its US retail products under the PPG Paints name for its company-owned stores while continuing to sell Glidden and Olympic at Home Depot. So while the corporate name changed from Pittsburgh Plate Glass to PPG Industries, the consumer paint brand was historically Pittsburgh Paints and is now PPG Paints.
