For trim, baseboards, doors, and window casings, you generally want a color that creates a clean, crisp contrast with walls and is timeless, so certain colors are usually avoided. Very dark or intense colors like deep red, navy, black, or bright yellow for all trim in a house can be overwhelming, make rooms feel smaller, and show dust, scuffs, and imperfections more readily, plus they are harder to repaint if you change your wall color. Highly saturated trendy colors like neon, lime green, or hot pink for trim often look dated quickly and can clash with furnishings and make a home harder to sell. Pure stark white with a very cool blue undertone can sometimes look harsh or clinical against warm wall colors, making walls look dirty. Also avoid using the exact same flat wall color and sheen on trim, because trim needs a harder, more washable finish like semi-gloss for durability, and using flat paint on trim leads to poor cleaning and faster wear. Many designers avoid trim colors that have no contrast at all with walls, as the architectural details get lost. The safest trim colors are soft whites, warm whites, or light neutrals in semi-gloss, which stay timeless, brighten the space, and are easy to clean.
