Semi-gloss is a type of interior and exterior paint finish defined by its level of sheen, or how much light it reflects. It is a mid-to-high gloss finish that falls between satin and high-gloss on the sheen spectrum. Technically, paint sheen is determined by the ratio of resin or binder to pigment in the formula. More resin creates a smoother, harder film that reflects more light. Semi-gloss has a relatively high resin content, which makes it durable, hard, and moisture-resistant when dried. Visually, it has a noticeable shine and a slick, polished appearance without being as mirror-like as full gloss. Functionally, semi-gloss is valued because it is very easy to clean, resists moisture, grease, and stains, and holds up well to scrubbing, which is why it is commonly used on trim, doors, cabinets, baseboards, window frames, bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and furniture. Because it reflects light, it can brighten a space and make details pop, but it also shows surface imperfections more than flatter finishes like matte or eggshell.
