You can tell if your paint is semi-gloss or satin by looking at several clues including the label, the shine level, the feel, and how it reflects light. The easiest way is to check the original paint can or receipt, because the sheen is always printed on the label. If you do not have the can, examine the wall in good lighting. Satin has a soft, velvety, pearl-like glow with moderate reflectivity, around 25 to 35% gloss, and you can see a gentle sheen but not a sharp reflection. Semi-gloss is noticeably shinier, around 35 to 70% gloss, with a slick, polished look where you can see more distinct reflections of light and even faint reflections of objects. Touch the wall. Satin feels smooth but slightly less slick, while semi-gloss feels harder, smoother, and almost enamel-like. You can also test washability. Semi-gloss is more resistant to scrubbing and moisture and will feel harder. If you have a sample area, shine a flashlight at a low angle. Satin will diffuse the light softly, while semi-gloss will create a sharper, brighter hot spot of reflected light.
