The disadvantages of semi-gloss paint are primarily related to its high shine and demanding application. First, because semi-gloss reflects a lot of light, it highlights every surface imperfection, including dents, nail holes, uneven drywall tape, patchy texture, brush strokes, and roller marks. This means walls and trim need to be perfectly prepped, sanded smooth, and primed, which adds time and labor. Second, it can create glare in rooms with strong natural or artificial lighting, which some people find distracting or too shiny for large wall areas. Third, it is more difficult to apply evenly than flat or eggshell paints. It shows lap marks, drips, and brush strokes more readily, requires careful technique to maintain a wet edge, and often needs multiple thin coats. Touch-ups are also harder because the touched-up spot will be noticeable due to sheen differences. Fourth, although durable, semi-gloss can feel less cozy and warm than matte finishes because of its slick, almost plastic-like appearance. Finally, oil-based semi-gloss can yellow over time, especially in low-light areas, and it has stronger fumes during application compared to flatter latex paints.
