Purpose of a wall is multifaceted, serving structural, functional, and aesthetic roles in buildings. Structurally, walls support weight of floors and roof and transfer loads to foundation, especially load bearing walls, and provide stability against wind and earthquakes. Functionally, walls divide interior spaces into rooms for privacy, security, and organization, creating separate areas for different activities. Walls provide enclosure and protection from weather, keeping out rain, wind, cold, and heat, and help with thermal insulation and soundproofing. Exterior walls protect from outside elements and provide security against intruders. Walls also provide surfaces for attaching finishes, cabinets, and utilities like electrical wiring and plumbing. Aesthetically, walls define architectural style, provide surfaces for decoration, color, and art, and influence interior design. Retaining walls hold back soil to prevent erosion. So purpose of wall is to support, divide, protect, insulate, and define spaces in building.
