What is in a wall depends on type of wall, but typical interior residential wall contains vertical wood or metal studs spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, horizontal top and bottom plates, insulation between studs for thermal and sound control such as fiberglass batts or foam, electrical wiring running through holes in studs connecting outlets and switches, plumbing pipes in some walls especially bathrooms and kitchens, drywall or plasterboard attached to studs on both sides, joint tape and compound covering seams, and possibly vapor barrier or fire blocking. Exterior walls additionally contain sheathing like plywood or OSB outside studs, house wrap or weather barrier, exterior siding like vinyl or brick, and more insulation, sometimes rigid foam outside sheathing. Walls may also contain blocking for support, low voltage wiring for internet, and in older homes, lath and plaster instead of drywall. Interior of wall is hollow space between studs filled with insulation and utilities.
