Two types of walls by function are load bearing walls and non-load bearing partition walls. Load bearing walls are structural walls that support weight of floors, roof, and upper stories and transfer load to foundation, typically exterior walls and some interior walls, and are essential for building stability, cannot be removed without structural support. Non-load bearing walls, also called partition walls, divide interior spaces into rooms but do not support structural weight, can be removed or moved more easily during remodeling, typically made of wood studs with drywall. Another classification by material could be masonry walls made of bricks or concrete blocks and framed walls made of wood or metal studs with drywall. By location, there are exterior walls that form outer envelope of building and interior walls that divide inside. So two common types are load bearing and non-load bearing walls, which differ in structural role and construction.
