Inside a house wall is hollow cavity between studs that contains structural framing and utilities. Typical house wall contains vertical wood or metal studs that provide structural support, horizontal top and bottom plates, insulation between studs such as fiberglass batts, cellulose, or spray foam for thermal and sound insulation, electrical wiring running through holes drilled in studs connecting to outlets, light switches, and fixtures, plumbing pipes for water supply and drainage in bathroom, kitchen, and laundry walls, HVAC ductwork in some walls, low voltage wiring for internet, cable TV, and phone, vapor barrier or moisture barrier in exterior walls to prevent condensation, fire blocking in certain locations for fire safety, and drywall or plasterboard attached to studs on both sides with tape and joint compound covering seams. In older homes, walls may contain lath and plaster, knob and tube wiring, or no insulation. Exterior walls also have sheathing, house wrap, and siding outside studs.
