The lifespan of a garage spring, whether torsion spring mounted above the door or extension spring along the side tracks, is measured in cycles rather than just years, with one cycle being one full open and close. Most standard garage springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles, which translates to roughly 7 to 12 years with average household use of 2 to 4 cycles per day. If you use your garage door more frequently, such as 6 to 8 cycles per day for a family with multiple cars and kids coming and going, the lifespan drops to 4 to 6 years. High-cycle springs are available rated for 20,000, 30,000 or even 50,000 cycles and can last 15 to 20 years but cost more upfront. Lifespan is shortened by lack of maintenance, lack of lubrication, rust from moisture, and especially from water dripping from clogged gutters above the garage that causes corrosion and pitting of the steel. Cold temperatures make steel more brittle, improper spring size that is undersized for door weight causes overstressing, and an unbalanced door puts extra strain on springs. Regular lubrication with silicone lubricant twice a year, keeping gutters clean, and annual balance checks can maximize lifespan.
