To raise a garage door with broken spring that normally counterbalances weight, you need to manually lift door with assistance and secure it, as broken spring makes door very heavy and dangerous to raise alone. First, ensure area clear and you have help, as door can weigh 150 to 300 pounds without spring support, requiring at least two strong people. Disconnect garage door opener from door by pulling emergency release cord, usually red cord hanging from trolley, down and toward door to disengage trolley, allowing manual operation without opener resistance. Ensure manual slide lock on track is disengaged that would prevent raising. Stand on both sides of door and lift evenly from bottom edge, using legs not back to avoid injury, lifting slowly and keeping door level to prevent it going off-track or cables tangling. If door is stuck at bottom due to being frozen or heavy, try lifting slightly then pausing to adjust grip. Once door raised to open position, you must prop it securely with ladder under door, clamp or locking pliers on track above rollers, or have person hold it, as without spring door will not stay open and will slam down causing injury if not secured. Do not leave door unattended open without securing. To lower door, lower slowly with help controlling descent. Do not use automatic opener to raise door with broken spring, as opener will strain, strip gear, or fail. Raising with broken spring should be temporary until professional replaces spring costing 200 to 400 dollars single and 300 to 600 pair, as operating with broken spring is unsafe.
