You should not spray regular WD-40 on your garage door spring, as it is not a proper lubricant for this application and can actually cause more harm than good over time. Standard WD-40 is a solvent and water displacer, not a long-lasting lubricant, and while it may make the spring quieter for a short time, it quickly dries out, leaves a residue that attracts dust and dirt, and can strip away existing grease, leading to increased friction and faster wear. Instead, you should use a silicone-based garage door lubricant or a white lithium grease spray that is specifically designed for garage doors. These products provide long-lasting lubrication that reduces friction between coils, prevents rust and corrosion, and withstands temperature changes. To lubricate properly, first clean the spring with a cloth to remove dirt, then spray silicone lubricant along the length of the torsion spring above the door or along extension springs, as well as on hinges, rollers, and bearings, twice a year. Avoid over-spraying onto the door tracks where rollers need grip. Keeping the spring lubricated extends its 10,000 cycle lifespan and prevents premature breakage. Also keep gutters above the garage clean, as water dripping onto springs causes rust that no lubricant can fully prevent if moisture is constant.
