Whether you can use your garage door with only one spring depends on spring system design, door weight, and safety, but generally it is not recommended to use door with only one spring if it was designed for two springs. Many garage doors have two torsion springs mounted above door that share load of counterbalancing door weight, and if one spring breaks, remaining spring cannot safely support full weight, making door too heavy to lift and causing opener to strain, leading to opener failure or door falling. If your door was originally designed with one torsion spring that is correctly sized for door weight, it can operate with one spring and can be used, though two-spring system provides redundancy and longer life. If door originally had two springs and one breaks, you can temporarily open door manually with help, but you should not continue automatic operation with opener using only one spring, as door will be unbalanced, opener will overwork, and remaining spring will break soon due to extra stress. Continuing to use door with only one spring can cause cable to come off drum, door to go off-track, and safety hazard. If one spring breaks, you should replace both springs at same time, as springs have same age and cycles and second will break soon, costing 300 to 600 dollars for pair professionally replaced. For extension springs on sides, if one breaks, door can still be opened but will be unbalanced. Call professional to assess.
