The full name of GE is General Electric Company, which is one of the most historically significant American multinational conglomerates. It was originally founded in 1892 through the merger of Edison General Electric Company, created by Thomas Edison, and Thomson-Houston Electric Company, with financial backing organized by J.P. Morgan. For most of the 20th century, GE was a massive industrial conglomerate involved in everything from light bulbs and appliances to jet engines, power turbines, locomotives, and medical imaging equipment. In recent years, the company has undergone major restructuring. The original General Electric Company split into three independent public companies. The aviation and energy focused business retained the GE name as GE Aerospace, the energy business became GE Vernova, and the healthcare business became GE HealthCare. When people refer to GE appliances, such as refrigerators, washers, and ovens sold at Home Depot or Lowes, that business is now majority owned by Haier under the name GE Appliances, a Haier company, headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky. Despite the splits, the historic full name General Electric remains widely recognized and associated with American industrial innovation and the famous GE logo monogram.
