The fastest way to get rid of bats that are living inside your house must be done humanely and legally, because killing bats is illegal in many places and bats are protected due to their ecological importance and declining populations. The fastest effective method is exclusion using one-way devices, not extermination. First, inspect your house at dusk to find entry points by watching where bats exit, common entry points include gaps larger than a quarter inch around rooflines, soffits, vents, chimneys, and fascia boards. Second, install one-way exclusion devices like one-way doors or netting over those entry points that let bats exit but not re-enter, and do this outside maternity season from May to August when flightless babies may be trapped inside, the best times are early spring or fall. Third, after confirming all bats are out, usually after 5 to 7 days, seal all entry holes with caulk, hardware cloth, and metal flashing. To encourage bats to leave quickly, you can use humane harassment inside the attic such as bright lights and loud radios, but do not use mothballs which are toxic. Never use poison, glue traps, or try to handle bats with bare hands because bats can carry rabies. For large colonies or if you are unsure, call a licensed wildlife control professional who follows humane and legal removal methods and can install bat houses away from your house as alternative roosts.
