When bats are happy or content, especially in familiar roosts with safety, warmth, and social companions, they show several behaviors that indicate relaxation and positive emotion, though they express it differently than humans or pets like dogs. Happy bats, particularly highly social species like Egyptian fruit bats and Mexican free-tailed bats, may make soft, low chattering, chirping, and purring sounds that are associated with contentment and social bonding, similar to how mothers communicate with pups. They may groom themselves and each other, which is a sign of comfort and social bonding, licking fur and cleaning wings carefully. When roosting happily together, bats may cuddle close, share body heat, and wrap wings around each other. Rehabilitated bats that are happy and comfortable with caretakers may spread wings, make soft vocalizations, and lean into gentle handling, and some fruit bats will show excitement when favorite foods like banana or mango are offered, crawling quickly and vocalizing. They may play with objects, hang relaxed with wings loosely folded, and exhibit relaxed breathing. In bat colonies, happy bats are active at dusk, emerging to hunt with energetic flight. While they do not smile or wag tails, their body language, soft vocalizations, mutual grooming, and relaxed posture when roosting together indicate happiness and contentment when they feel safe and have food.
