A bat's weakness includes both physical vulnerabilities and environmental sensitivities that can be exploited for humane exclusion. Physically, bats are weak when on the ground because they need to drop from a height to generate lift for flight and cannot take off easily from flat surfaces, so a grounded bat is vulnerable and terrified. They have thin, delicate wing membranes that can be torn easily and take time to heal, and their small size makes them susceptible to cold, wind, and rain that make flying difficult and waste energy. They are vulnerable to dehydration and starvation because they have high metabolism and need to eat many insects nightly. Environmentally, bats are very sensitive to disturbance in their roosts during the day when they are sleeping and during hibernation and maternity season, because disturbance causes them to waste stored energy and abandon pups. They are sensitive to bright lights at night that disrupt their emergence and hunting, and to loss of roost sites and food due to sealing of buildings and pesticide use that kills insects. Their reliance on specific temperatures for hibernation is a weakness, as white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease that thrives in cold damp caves, has killed millions of bats by waking them during hibernation. They are also vulnerable to predators like owls, snakes, and cats when roosting. So their greatest weaknesses are being grounded, having delicate wings, sensitivity to disturbance, and dependence on insects and specific roost conditions.
