Many animals eat bats, both while bats are flying at night and while they are roosting during the day, though bats have relatively few predators due to being nocturnal and able to fly. The most significant predators of bats include owls, especially barn owls and great horned owls that hunt at night and can catch bats in flight using silent flight and keen hearing, hawks and falcons that catch bats at dusk when bats emerge from roosts, snakes that can climb into caves, attics, and trees to eat roosting bats, especially rat snakes and other climbing snakes, raccoons, cats, and other climbing mammals that can reach roost sites and catch bats, and in some tropical regions larger carnivorous bats, such as the spectral bat, that prey on smaller bats. In some areas, alligators and fish can catch bats that fly low over water. Humans also cause bat deaths through habitat destruction, wind turbines, and intentional killing, though killing bats is illegal in many places. For baby bats, called pups, ants and other insects can be threats in roosts. While bats are agile fliers with echolocation that helps them avoid obstacles and many predators, they are still vulnerable when roosting in large colonies where predators can find them easily, and white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease, has killed millions of bats in North America, though it is not predation but disease.
