Best time of year to paint depends on interior versus exterior. For interior painting, you can paint any time of year because indoor temperature and humidity are controlled, but best time is fall and winter when painters are less busy, so you can get better prices and faster scheduling, and low humidity with heating on helps paint dry evenly. Avoid interior painting during very humid summer without air conditioning, as slow drying can cause issues. For exterior painting, best time is late spring through early fall when temperatures are consistently between 50 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, humidity below 70 percent, and little rain, typically May to September in most US regions, with late spring and early fall being ideal because not too hot. Avoid exterior painting in winter when below 35 to 50 degrees, in rainy season, or in extreme heat above 90 degrees when paint dries too fast and leaves lap marks. Ideal exterior conditions are dry, mild, overcast but bright day with light wind. So for exterior, late spring and early fall are best, for interior, fall and winter offer better contractor availability and good drying conditions indoors. Always check paint label for temperature range.
