A painter is a person who paints, either as artist creating pictures or as skilled tradesperson applying paint to surfaces. As artist, a painter is someone who creates art using paint such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, or gouache on canvas, paper, walls, or other surfaces to express ideas, emotions, or depict subjects like portraits, landscapes, still life, or abstract compositions. Artistic painters study color theory, composition, light, perspective, and technique, and may work as fine artists, illustrators, muralists, or hobbyists. Famous painters include Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh, and Frida Kahlo. As tradesperson, a painter, also called house painter, decorator, or painting contractor, is skilled worker who prepares and paints interior and exterior surfaces of houses, buildings, and structures, including walls, ceilings, trim, doors, and cabinets, to protect surfaces and improve appearance. Trade painters do surface preparation like cleaning, sanding, filling holes, priming, and then apply paint with brushes, rollers, or sprayers. They may work residential or commercial. So painter can mean creative artist or professional tradesperson, both work with paint but with different purpose, one artistic expression, other protection and decoration.
