What we call a painter depends on type of painting they do. For someone who paints pictures as art, we call them artist, fine artist, visual artist, painter, illustrator, portraitist if they paint portraits, landscape painter if they paint landscapes, muralist if they paint murals, watercolorist, oil painter, or master painter for highly skilled. For someone who paints houses and buildings as trade, we call them house painter, house painter and decorator in UK, interior painter, exterior painter, painting contractor, decorator, professional painter, or tradesperson. For someone who paints as hobby, we call them hobbyist painter, amateur painter, or art enthusiast. Formal titles include Artist, Professional Painter, Painting Contractor, Decorator. In historical context, great painters are called old masters. In casual language, we might call them brushman, but painter or artist is most common. So painter can mean both creative professional who makes art and skilled tradesperson who applies paint to walls, and what we call them depends on whether they create art or paint buildings, but artist for art painter and house painter or decorator for trade painter are most accurate terms used everyday.
