What is special about pigeons is their remarkable combination of intelligence, navigation ability, loyalty, and historical importance that makes them unique among birds. Pigeons are incredibly intelligent, able to recognize themselves in mirrors, recognize individual human faces and remember them for years, learn complex routes, and count to some extent. They have extraordinary homing ability, homing pigeons can navigate hundreds of miles back to their home loft using Earth's magnetic fields, sun position, landmarks, and even low frequency sounds, and they were used as messengers in both World Wars saving many lives. Pigeons are devoted parents, both male and female produce crop milk to feed chicks, and they form strong lifelong monogamous pair bonds, sharing nesting and parenting duties equally. They have excellent vision with ability to see ultraviolet light and can see nearly 360 degrees. They are highly adaptable and have lived alongside humans for thousands of years, being one of the first domesticated birds. They can fly at speeds up to 60 miles per hour and for long distances without stopping. Despite being common in cities, they are often misunderstood and called rats with wings, yet they are clean birds that groom frequently. Their cooing is soothing and their presence has been used in therapy. Overall, pigeons are special due to their intelligence, loyalty, navigation, and long history with humans.
