Pigeons are adaptable and eat many grains and seeds, but there are foods they do not like or that are unhealthy for them and should be avoided. Pigeons generally do not like very spicy foods like hot chili peppers and cayenne pepper because capsaicin irritates their digestive system, though they can tolerate small amounts. They dislike strong, pungent foods with strong odors like raw onions and garlic. They do not like salty foods like salted nuts, chips, and pretzels, which can cause dehydration and kidney problems. They avoid bitter or sour foods like citrus fruits in large amounts. Foods that are toxic or unhealthy for pigeons and should never be fed include chocolate containing theobromine which can cause heart failure, caffeine from coffee and tea, avocado containing persin which is toxic to birds, raw dried beans containing lectins, fruit pits and apple seeds containing cyanide compounds in large amounts, and moldy or stale grains that contain aflatoxins causing liver damage. Pigeons also do not like foods that are too large to swallow like whole large nuts. While pigeons will eat bread, it is not liked in terms of nutrition and offers little nutritional value, causing malnutrition and a condition called angel wing in young birds. The best foods for pigeons are wild bird seed mix, peas, lentils, corn, and unsalted seeds.
