Nikola Tesla, the famous inventor and electrical engineer, had a deep affection for pigeons, especially in his later years in New York City, and he said many things about them that showed his emotional bond. Tesla spent much of his later life feeding and caring for pigeons in parks, particularly in Bryant Park and near his hotel, and he was known to bring injured pigeons back to his hotel room to nurse them. He famously said about a particular white pigeon he loved, I have been feeding pigeons, thousands of them for years. But there was one, a beautiful bird, pure white with light grey tips on its wings, that one was different. It was a female. I would know that pigeon anywhere. He said he loved that pigeon as a man loves a woman, and that she loved him, and that when she was ill he knew and would go to her. Tesla said, I loved that pigeon as a man loves a woman, and she loved me. As long as I had her, there was a purpose to my life. When she died, he said something in him died as well. He also said that pigeons brought purpose to his life when he was lonely and isolated. Tesla's love for pigeons is well documented and shows his compassionate side, and he reportedly spent hundreds of dollars caring for them, which contributed to his financial difficulties later in life, but he found comfort and meaning in their companionship.
