In architectural and maritime engineering, a structure is considered a pier when it consists of a raised walkway or platform supported by open pillars or pilings that projects outward from the shoreline into a lake, river, or ocean. Additionally, in bridge engineering, any massive vertical column, concrete pillar, or masonry support structure carrying the weight of an overhead bridge span between supporting arches is also considered a pier.
