While both are maritime structures facilitating interaction between land and water, they differ in construction and purpose. A pier is an elevated wooden or concrete platform supported by open pillars or pilings stretching out over the water, designed for strolling, fishing, and boat docking on both sides. In contrast, a quay is a solid masonry, stone, or concrete wharf built parallel to the shoreline, designed specifically for ships to berth alongside to load and unload cargo.
