While both are popular pedestrian wooden pathways found in coastal resort towns, they serve entirely different layouts. A boardwalk is a wide, pedestrian promenade built parallel to the shoreline along a beach, featuring shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. In contrast, a pier is a long, narrow wooden or concrete structure that projects perpendicularly out into the open ocean or lake, surrounded by water on multiple sides.
