What is artist syndrome is not an official medical diagnosis, but a colloquial term used to describe a set of psychological and behavioural patterns common among highly creative people, including intense emotional sensitivity, perfectionism, imposter syndrome and fear of being judged, sometimes called creative's block or tortured artist stereotype. It can include symptoms like extreme self-criticism about work, procrastination due to fear work is not good enough, mood swings tied to creative output, difficulty handling criticism, financial anxiety due to irregular income, and isolation from working alone in studio. In psychology, related concepts include imposter syndrome where artist feels fraud despite success, and burnout from overwork before exhibition. Some use artist syndrome to describe physical conditions like repetitive strain injury from painting, or visual snow, but more commonly it refers to mental health challenges. Research shows artists have higher rates of anxiety and depression than general population, due to precarious income, public scrutiny and emotional labour of art. However, being artist does not mean you have syndrome, many artists thrive. If you experience persistent low mood, anxiety, substance use or inability to create, it is important to seek help via GP, Headspace for young artists, Support Act for musicians and artists, and NAVA resources. Managing artist syndrome involves routine, boundaries, community, exercise, and separating self-worth from art sales. So artist syndrome is informal term for emotional challenges of creative life, not clinical diagnosis.
