What expenses can artists claim in Australia as tax deductions depends on whether you are hobbyist or carrying on business as sole trader with ABN, but if you are in business you can claim wide range of work-related expenses. Claimable expenses include art materials like canvas, paint, brushes, clay, inks, photographic paper and printing costs, studio rent if you rent dedicated studio, or home studio running costs at $0.67 per hour plus portion of electricity and internet, insurance including public liability, professional indemnity and fine art insurance, gallery commissions and exhibition fees, marketing costs like website hosting, Instagram ads, business cards and photography of artwork, professional development like workshops, courses, books and art magazines, travel costs to galleries, exhibitions and to buy materials at cents per km or logbook, car expenses portion for business, phone and internet portion used for art business, accounting and legal fees, membership fees for NAVA and guilds, entry fees for art prizes, framing costs, and courier and postage for shipping artworks. Equipment over $300 like easel, kiln, pottery wheel, computer, camera is depreciated over effective life, but under instant asset write-off for small business turnover under $10M, assets under $20,000 can be claimed 100% immediately in 2024-2025. You cannot claim personal living costs. Keep receipts, diary and logbook. If turnover under $75K, you may not need GST registration, but you can still claim.
