What are the Three C's of art is a framework taught in art education with several interpretations, most common being Concept, Composition and Craftsmanship, or Content, Composition and Craft. Concept is the idea, message or story behind artwork, what you want to communicate, why you made it, which gives depth and meaning. Composition is arrangement of elements like line, shape, colour, texture and space to create visual harmony and guide eye, including rule of thirds, balance and focal point. Craftsmanship or Craft is technical skill, execution and quality of making, such as brushwork, drawing accuracy and finishing. Another popular Three C's for art business is Creativity, Consistency and Commerce, meaning you need creativity to make, consistency to show up and build body of work, and commerce to sell and manage business. For art critique, Three C's are Context, Content and Craft, where Context is historical and cultural background, Content is subject matter, and Craft is skill. For collectors, Three C's are Condition, Provenance and Rarity. For fine art insurance, Three C's are Condition, Coverage and Care. Most art schools in Australia teach Concept, Composition and Craftsmanship as core for assessing fine art, ensuring work has strong idea, strong design and strong execution. Without one C, work may be weak, for example beautiful craft without concept is decorative, strong concept with poor craft fails to communicate.
