A squirrel's favorite human foods are those that are high in fat, sugar, and salt, because squirrels are opportunistic foragers that seek calorie-dense foods, similar to many rodents. Their top favorites among human foods include nuts like peanuts, walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts, especially roasted and salted peanuts which are very attractive though salted nuts are not healthy for them, peanut butter which has a strong fatty aroma, and chocolate, cookies, and other sweets. They also love corn, including corn chips, popcorn, and sweet corn, bread, especially white bread and pastries, and fruits like apples, grapes, and berries. Squirrels are notorious for raiding bird feeders for sunflower seeds and will also steal pet food, especially dog and cat kibble, and garbage containing food waste. They love pizza crusts, french fries, and other fast food leftovers in urban areas. While they enjoy these human foods, many are not healthy for squirrels, as salty, sugary, and processed foods can cause health problems, obesity, and nutritional imbalances, and feeding them can make them dependent on humans and more likely to cause property damage by chewing into homes. If you want to feed squirrels intentionally, unsalted nuts, raw sunflower seeds, and fresh vegetables are better choices than processed human foods.
