Many foods that are safe for humans are toxic or harmful to squirrels and should never be fed to them, especially if you have pet squirrels or you are feeding wild squirrels. Foods toxic to squirrels include chocolate which contains theobromine that can cause heart failure and death, caffeine from coffee and energy drinks, avocado skin and pit which contain persin that can cause breathing difficulties, raw dried beans which contain lectins, onions and garlic which can damage red blood cells, and alcohol. Highly salty, sugary, or processed foods like chips, candy, and sweetened cereals are harmful and can cause health problems. Stale or moldy nuts and corn can contain aflatoxins from mold that are toxic to squirrels and cause liver damage. Fruit pits and apple seeds contain small amounts of cyanide compounds that can be harmful in large quantities. For pet squirrels, a balanced diet of commercial rodent blocks, fresh vegetables, and limited nuts and fruits is safest. For wild squirrels, you should not feed them at all if you want to deter them, but if you do feed birds, avoid putting out toxic foods. Also, never use poison baits intended for rats and mice around squirrels, as these poisons are highly toxic to squirrels, pets, and other wildlife and can cause secondary poisoning.
