Squirrels can appear friendly, especially in parks and urban areas where they are habituated to humans and may approach people for food, but they are wild animals and not domesticated pets, so their friendliness depends on context and individual temperament. In many city parks, Eastern gray squirrels have learned to associate humans with food and will come close, take peanuts from hands, and show little fear, which can seem friendly and entertaining. Some people who rescue and hand-raise baby squirrels report that they become very affectionate, playful, and bond with their caretakers, similar to pet rodents. However, wild squirrels are naturally cautious prey animals that will bite or scratch if they feel cornered, threatened, or if someone tries to grab them, and bites can cause infection. They can also be territorial around their nests and may chatter, flick tails, and act aggressively if you get too close to their babies or food stash. They can carry diseases, fleas, ticks, and parasites that can be transmitted to humans and pets. While they are intelligent, curious, and often amusing to watch, they are not friendly in the way domesticated dogs or cats are, and they can cause property damage by chewing into attics, raiding bird feeders, and digging in gardens. So they can seem friendly but should be treated as wild animals with respect and caution.
