A good temporary patch for a roof is one that stops water intrusion quickly without causing more damage, and can last a few weeks to a few months until permanent repair. The most effective temporary patch is a heavy-duty polyethylene tarp. Use at least a 6-mil thick blue or silver tarp, large enough to extend 3 to 4 feet beyond the damaged area on all sides and over the ridge. Secure it with 2x4 lumber nailed at the edges, not nails through the field of the tarp into the roof deck. For smaller areas with a few missing shingles, roofing cement and a piece of aluminum flashing or spare shingle can work. Apply a thick layer of roofing cement or roofing tar with a putty knife under and over the damaged area, press the flashing or shingle piece into it, and cover with more cement. Another option is peel-and-stick waterproofing tape like Flex Tape or Grace Ice and Water Shield, applied to a clean dry surface. For small punctures or nail holes, a tube of roofing sealant is sufficient. Avoid using silicone caulk, as it does not adhere well to asphalt. Remember, these are temporary solutions. Tarps can blow off in wind, and roofing cement will crack over time. Plan for a permanent shingle replacement within 30 to 90 days.
