Leaving any part of a roof without shingles is a dangerous gamble, and while a roof might survive a few days or weeks without experiencing an active leak thanks to the underlying felt or synthetic membrane, you should never leave it exposed intentionally. The secondary underlayment is designed to provide temporary protection during active construction or emergency repairs, but it is not engineered to withstand continuous ultraviolet radiation, high winds, and heavy downpours for an extended period. Within just a few weeks of exposure, sunlight can cause underlayment to become brittle and crack, while wind can easily tear the exposed material away from the roof deck. If a storm hits an unprotected roof deck, water will rapidly infiltrate your attic, insulation, and drywall, creating extensive mold and wood rot issues. Therefore, missing shingles should always be replaced within 48 to 72 hours whenever possible.
